Term 1 Week 8

We are all so happy to be back! It's the first real week of school, though Ms. Maki and I were lucky to be able to get to know most of our students through our Zoom sessions. But it's nothing compared to being able to play with everyone in person. We're still getting used to our new routine, so we've been trying to take it easy.

We have been focusing a lot on the rules of our classroom and practicing talking to each other nicely. We have a few rules that are different from Preschool. The children need to ask to be excused before getting up from eating to make sure no one chokes and so we can monitor their food. We keep most of our toys off the floor and at particular centers to encourage in-depth exploration and keep our toys from getting broken. The students each have their own coloring packets that include pencil control worksheets, and they will only be bringing these home when they have finished the whole booklet. Don't worry. They still get to color! It's very important for their development and later writing skills.

We will also go to both the park across the street and the Enishi playground, which is provides a lot of physical challenges.

This week we continued our Sharing the Planet Theme by planting in our garden.

We also painted with leaves, either as brushes, or as stamps.

Friday was Literacy Day, and we had a little in-class pajama party. We read lots of books, and watched a few Vooks. Vooks are animated books that highlight words as they are being read. This is great for their pre-reading skills, reinforcing language comprehension and learning sight words.
